This summer, the Los Angeles County Department of Youth Development, Public Defender’s Office, and Alternate Public Defender’s Office partnered to equip young people with essential information about their constitutional rights and pathways to civic action.

Standing alongside civil rights advocates and community members, Los Angeles County Public Defender Ricardo D. García called for universal clemency for California’s death row population, emphasizing the need to address the systemic inequities that have shaped capital punishment.
“As public defenders, we see firsthand how profoundly unjust our criminal legal system is. In California, this system is deeply stained by systemic racism, flaws that cannot be undone, when the punishment is death.” said L.A. County Public Defender Ricardo D. García.

Irreversible punishment has no place in an imperfect system. Universal clemency is a necessary step toward ending a punishment that is costly, inequitable, and vulnerable to irreversible mistakes.
